Hardwood Floor Installation Tips
Hardwood floors need to be installed on a flat surface. No matter which surface type a sub floor will need to be installed. Floor installation on concrete floors that are above ground level or on the same level as the ground, all that is necessary is a moisture barrier like polyethylene film be laid before the sub-floor is put in with power activated fasteners to hold them tight to the concrete. Then tar paper also known as asphalt felt is laid down before the hardwood flooring is installed. This acts as a separate moisture barrier and also keeps the flooring from making creaking sounds when walked on. It keeps the wooden slats stable from movement. Concrete floors below ground level need engineered wood made of layers of wood glued together. They are essentially waterproof. This is known as floating hardwood floor installation. The tongue in groove edges fit together and are locked in place. All concrete should be dry before installation of sub-flooring.
Other surfaces like wood need sub-flooring as well. The installers use wood screws long enough to attach the foundation to the floor joists. Tar paper is laid down on top of the substrate. The hardwood flooring is then laid. They drill small guide holes every 10 inches or so. The screws are inserted through the guide holes and screwed in attaching the boards to the subfloor. The boards are laid in ½ inch from the wall so that there is room for expansion. The floor and the walls are marked before flooring is laid. The substrate has a line marked a ½ inch from the wall all around. The wall gets marked at the floor joist positions. Then lines are snapped to make the installer aware of where the floor joist are under the paper. The installers lay out the floor on top of the felt paper. They arrange the flooring according to the grain and to eventually come out with the best pattern before attaching it to the floor. They try to hit the joist with the guide holes every 16 inches. With two holes in each board 10 inches apart, there is a good chance that a hole will match a joist point in order to keep the floor stable. After they lay one row with face nails, they can use air guns to staple or nail the rest of the boards quickly. They will only cut boards to fit at the end of rows. At the end of laying of the flooring, they will straighten the uneven edges with a circular saw. Molding is then nailed on the walls and this will give the impression that the flooring goes all the way to the wall. Engineered hardwood floor installation can be done by the do it yourself homeowner with the right guidance and the proper materials.
